Michael F. Price earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Oklahoma in 1973. A native of Long Island, New York, and a dedicated Sooner football fan, Price chose OU for his undergraduate studies. After graduation, he began his career at Heine Securities Corporation in New York as a research assistant to Max L. Heine, who became his mentor. By 1976, Heine elevated Price to general partner, and together they managed the Mutual Series Funds. Following Heine's death in 1989, Price served as chairman and president of Mutual Series, leading the funds to substantial success. In 1996, Franklin Resources acquired Mutual Series for $430 million, and Price continued managing the funds until 2000 before founding MFP Investors LLC. Renowned for his value investing approach, Price was frequently profiled in major publications, including cover features in Fortune and Mutual Funds Magazine, exerting considerable influence in the investment management field.
Price's enduring legacy at the University of Oklahoma stems from his extraordinary philanthropy. His gifts funded the renaming of the business school as the Michael F. Price College of Business in 1998, several endowed faculty positions, a library endowment, the Price Scholars program, and the Michael F. Price Student Investment Fund. Additional contributions supported facilities like Michael F. Price Hall and the Price Sooner Wellness System for student-athletes. The Price Family Foundation provided $3 million for a biomedical research institute in partnership with Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Price served as a trustee for the University of Oklahoma. In December 2024, the university unveiled a statue honoring his impact. Michael F. Price passed away on March 14, 2022.
