Professor Michael Solomon serves as Professor of Surgical Research at the University of Sydney within the Central Clinical School and is Academic Head of the Department of Colorectal Surgery at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He is an internationally renowned colorectal surgeon with expertise in complex surgery for rectal and recurrent malignancy, inflammatory bowel disease, complex fistulas, minimally and maximally invasive colorectal procedures, pelvic exenteration, peritonectomy, and retroperitoneal sarcomas. His qualifications include MB BCh (Hons) BAO, MSc in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Toronto, DMedSc in Pelvic Exenteration from the University of Sydney, DMed in Minimally Invasive Colorectal Surgery from the National University of Ireland, FRCSI (Hons), and FRACS. As Founder and Head of the Surgical Outcomes Research Centre (SOuRCe) at the University of Sydney and Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, he advances evidence-based surgery through clinical trials and mentors young academic surgeons, having supervised over 70 higher degree research students.
Solomon's prolific research output encompasses over 450 peer-reviewed papers, 22 book chapters, and one edited book, Operative Surgery of the Colon, Rectum and Anus (6th edition). He holds key leadership positions including past President of the Colorectal Surgical Society of Australia and New Zealand (CSSANZ), Chairman of the RACS/CSSANZ Training Board in Colorectal Surgery, Inaugural Chairman of the RPA Institute of Academic Surgery, and Program Director of Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery for the Sydney Local Health District. Additionally, he is a Consultant Surgeon at Chris O’Brien Lifehouse. His contributions have earned major awards such as the Ruthven Blackburn Medal for Outstanding Clinical Researcher from the University of Sydney Sydney Medical School (2022), RPA Foundation Research Medal and Prize (2014), Henry Windsor Medal from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (2021), Abraham Colles Medal from the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland (2013), and John Goligher Medal from the Royal Society of Medicine, along with delivery of 18 named international orations, highlighting his profound influence on the field of surgical research and colorectal surgery.
