Dr. Michaela Harcourt is a board-certified equine surgeon and specialist in equine surgery affiliated with the Murdoch University Veterinary Hospital through her postgraduate training and research contributions. She completed her Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVetBio, BVSc) at Charles Sturt University in Wagga Wagga in 2016. Following her veterinary graduation, Harcourt gained practical experience in equine practice at clinics including Agnes Banks Equine Clinic and Wollondilly Veterinary Centre. In 2021, she joined the Equine Services at The Animal Hospital, Murdoch University, as a resident in equine surgery, where she developed expertise in urgent and emergent procedures such as colic surgeries, wound reconstructions, fracture repairs, and abdominal surgeries. She is particularly passionate about gastrointestinal surgery and wound repair, emphasizing high-quality patient care.
In 2022, Harcourt earned a Masters by Research from Murdoch University for her thesis, 'Duration of action provided by prilocaine and other local anaesthetic agents in equine palmar digital nerve blocks,' under the supervision of Giselle Hosgood. This work focused on improving diagnostic techniques for equine lameness through comparative analysis of local anesthetics. Her research interests encompass equine biomechanics, lameness, medicine, surgery, veterinary anesthesiology, anatomy, and advanced lameness diagnostics in sports horses. Publications include a 2018 case report on 'Magnetic resonance and radiographic imaging of a case of bilateral bipartite navicular bones in a horse.' In late 2024, she received specialist registration in equine surgery and holds certification from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS), reflecting her advanced training and contributions to the field of equine veterinary medicine at institutions like Murdoch University.
