About Michelle

Michelle Cheong is Professor of Information Systems (Education) at the School of Computing and Information Systems, Singapore Management University. She serves as Associate Dean (Postgraduate Professional Programmes) and Director of the Doctor of Engineering programme. She earned her PhD from the Singapore-MIT Alliance at Nanyang Technological University in 2005, along with earlier degrees including a Master of Science from the Singapore-MIT Alliance, a Master of Science from the National University of Singapore, and a Bachelor of Engineering from the National University of Singapore. Her academic appointments at SMU began in 2005 as Lecturer, progressing to Assistant Professor of Information Systems (Practice), Associate Professor of Information Systems (Practice), and her current professorial role since 2020. Prior to SMU, she worked as a Research Fellow at the Singapore Institute of Manufacturing Technology and as a CAD/CAM Engineer at ASM Technology Singapore.

Cheong’s research interests include learning analytics and AI in education, spreadsheets modeling and pedagogy, data analytics and decision analytics, and operations management. She has authored or co-authored numerous refereed journal articles, books such as Business Modeling with Spreadsheets (multiple editions), book chapters, and conference papers on topics including analytics-enabled authentic assessment, spreadsheet modeling applications, supply chain coordination, and sentiment analysis from social media. She has received several teaching awards, including the SMU Teaching Excellence Award for Postgraduate Professional Programmes in 2018, the National Day Award Public Administration Medal (Bronze) in 2016, and the Best Associate Professor of Practice Award in 2014. Cheong has held various administrative roles directing postgraduate programmes and contributed to curriculum development in analytics and professional education.
