Michelle Martin serves as Department Head and Professor in the Department of Health Informatics and Information Management at Louisiana Tech University, part of the College of Applied and Natural Sciences. She received her Bachelor of Science in Health Information Management from Louisiana Tech University in 1994. She then pursued advanced degrees at the same institution, earning a Master of Business Administration in 1998 and a Master of Education with a business concentration in 2005. Prior to her appointment as a professor at Louisiana Tech University in 1998, Martin held the position of Director of Health Information and Medical Staff Coordinator at a rural hospital in North Louisiana. In her leadership role, she directs the department focused on preparing students to bridge the gap between clinicians, administrators, and information technology professionals in healthcare settings.
Martin's academic interests center on rural health facilities, workforce development and education, and medical coding and billing processes. She is credentialed as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Certified Rural Health Clinic Professional (CRHCP), and Fellow of the American Health Information Management Association (FAHIMA). Martin is also recognized as an AHIMA ICD-10 Trainer. Her professional engagements include membership in the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS). She holds the position of Secretary on the Board of Directors of the Louisiana HIMSS Chapter (LAHIMSS). With nearly three decades of involvement in health informatics education since her undergraduate studies, Michelle Martin continues to contribute to the profession through teaching, leadership, and service.
