Miguel Figueira de Faria is a Full Professor in the Department of History, Arts and Humanities at the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa, where he served as Director from 2015 to 2021. He holds a Degree in History, a PhD in History, a Doctorate in Art History, and Agregação in History from the Faculty of Arts of the University of Porto. He is also a member of the Scientific Council and the Lisbon Studies Research Group at the Institute of Art History (IHA), NOVA Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Additionally, he is a Member of the Geographical Society of Lisbon and a Corresponding Academician of the National Academy of Fine Arts.
His academic interests and research specializations include art history, history of science, business history, urban planning and public monuments, art and politics, scientific design and natural history, engraving and sculpture, Lisbon studies, urbanism, heritage, history of the book, and history of colonial Brazil. Key publications encompass 'A imagem útil: José Joaquim Freire (1760-1847) desenhador topográfico e de história natural: arte, ciência e razão de estado no final do antigo regime' (2001), 'Da facilitação e da ornamentação: a imagem nas edições do Arco do Cego' (2000), 'Alfredo da Silva: biografia. 1871-1942' (2004), 'Alfredo da Silva e Salazar' (2009), 'Do Terreiro do Paço à Praça do Comércio: história de um espaço urbano' (2014), 'A imagem impressa: produção, comércio e consumo de gravura no final do Antigo Regime' (2005), 'Banco Comercial Português: a primeira década, 1985-1995' (2001), 'Lisnave: contributos para a história da indústria naval em Portugal' (2001), and 'Machado de Castro (1731-1822): estudos' (2008). These works address themes in art, urban history, business, and scientific illustration in Portugal.
