Associate Professor Mike Climstein (PhD, FASMF, FACSM, FESSA, AEP) is an esteemed academic and researcher in the Faculty of Health at Southern Cross University, where he holds the position of Course Coordinator for the Master of Clinical Exercise Physiology program and serves as Deputy Academic Integrity Officer. He directs the Aquatic Based Research Unit and maintains an adjunct Associate Professor role in the Physical Activity, Lifestyle, Ageing and Wellbeing Faculty Research Group at the University of Sydney. Additionally, Climstein is Director of Research for the World Masters Games Association and Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Exercise Science. His academic qualifications include a PhD from OTHOS, complemented by fellowships from Sports Medicine Australia (FASMF), the American College of Sports Medicine (FACSM), Exercise & Sports Science Australia (FAAESS), and accreditation as an Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP). Climstein's research specializations include clinical exercise physiology, medical and health aspects of master athletes, prevention and rehabilitation of chronic diseases, injury surveillance in sports and exercise, surfing physiology and injuries, cardiac rehabilitation, smart textiles for physiological monitoring, cancer, and osteoporosis. He has produced 159 peer-reviewed papers and 14 book chapters, with his work cited over 4,000 times. Key publications feature 'The physiological, musculoskeletal and psychological effects of stand up paddle boarding' (2016), 'World Masters Games: North American participant medical and health history survey' (2014), 'Endurance masters athletes: a model of successful ageing and consequently reduced risk for chronic disease?' (2018), 'Chapter 11 - Physical Activity: Generic Prescription for Health' (2017), and recent contributions on melanoma skin checks and skin cancer detection (2023-2024).
