About Mitiko

Mitiko Saiki is a researcher and titular professor at the Instituto de Pesquisas Energéticas e Nucleares (IPEN-CNEN/SP), associated with the Universidade de São Paulo. She earned a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the Escola Politécnica at the Universidade de São Paulo in 1969, a master’s degree in chemistry (analytical chemistry) from the Universidade de São Paulo in 1972, and a doctorate in chemistry (analytical chemistry) from the Universidade de São Paulo in 1975. She completed research stays at the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the United States and the University of Shizuoka in Japan.

Her research focuses on trace element determination using nuclear analytical techniques, primarily neutron activation analysis, with applications in atmospheric pollution biomonitoring, analysis of biological tissues and fluids for disease studies, abrasivity of dental materials, corrosion products of biomaterials, and elemental characterization of pharmaceutical products. She teaches and supervises students in the postgraduate programs at IPEN-USP, including courses such as Radioquímica e Análise por Ativação. Saiki has been a titular member of the Academia de Ciências do Estado de São Paulo since 2012 and received the title of Pesquisadora Emérita from IPEN in 2014.
