About Morgan

Professor Morgan Alexander is Professor of Biomedical Surfaces in the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham, within the Faculty of Science. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Materials from the University of Sheffield awarded in 1988 and a PhD from the same institution awarded in 1992. His career at the University of Nottingham includes appointment as Professor of Biomedical Surfaces in 2010, following roles as Associate Professor and Reader of Biomedical Surface Analysis from 2004 to 2010. Prior positions include EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow and Senior Lecturer at UMIST from 1998 to 2003, EU Marie Curie Fellow at Université Claude Bernard Lyon 1 from 1996 to 1998, Post Doctoral Researcher at the University of Sheffield from 1993 to 1996, and Surface Analyst at CSMA Ltd from 1992 to 1993.

Professor Alexander directs the EPSRC Large Grant on designing bio-instructive materials for translation-ready medical devices and the 3D OrbiSIMS facility. His research focuses on developing materials for biological environments through characterisation of surface-biological response relationships, including high-throughput materials screening approaches applied to bacterial adhesion, stem cell response, and medical device performance. He has authored over 200 papers in peer-reviewed journals such as Nature Biotechnology, Nature Materials, Nature Methods, Nature Communications, Advanced Materials, PNAS, and Biomaterials, and has contributed to books on surface chemical modification and analysis. His work is funded by the Wellcome Trust, EPSRC, BBSRC, MRC, and industry, with collaborators across disciplines and institutions including MIT. Awards include Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher recognitions in Pharmacology and Toxicology for 2021, 2022, and 2025, and in the Cross-Field category for 2023; the Rivière Prize from the UK Surface Analysis Forum in 2024; Wellcome Trust Senior Investigator Award from 2014 to 2022; election as AVS Fellow in 2013; Royal Society-Wolfson Research Merit Award from 2012 to 2017; and Fellowship of the Royal Society of Chemistry since 2008. He previously served as Head of the Laboratory of Biophysics and Surface Analysis from 2010 to 2014, Chair of the EPSRC Materials Programme funding panel in 2004, and EPSRC Peer Review College member since 1999.
