About Morgan

Morgan Carpenter is an Associate Professor of Practice in the Sydney School of Public Health, Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, affiliated with Sydney Health Ethics. He earned his PhD and Master of Bioethics from the University of Sydney, and a Master of Information Technology from the University of Technology Sydney. Carpenter's research centers on human rights and ethics concerning the treatment of individuals with innate variations of sex characteristics, commonly referred to as intersex variations or differences of sex development. His academic interests also encompass medicine, health policy, and social policy. As an internationally recognised expert in this domain, his scholarship addresses critical issues in bioethics and human rights.

In his professional career, Carpenter concurrently serves as Executive Director of InterAction for Health and Human Rights, providing advocacy and psychosocial support services for people with intersex variations. He is an inaugural member of the Australian Capital Territory Government's Variations in Sex Characteristics Restricted Medical Treatment Assessment Board and a council member of the New South Wales Government's LGBTIQA+ Advisory Council. Additionally, he has consulted for the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, the Australian Capital Territory government, and the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Carpenter contributes to advisory groups for the Australian Department of Health and Aged Care, the Australian Bureau of Statistics, and New South Wales Health. His influential publications include "The human rights of intersex people: Addressing harmful practices and rhetoric of change" (Reproductive Health Matters, 2016), "Intersex: Stories and statistics from Australia" (Open Book Publishers, 2016), "Intersex variations, human rights, and the International classification of diseases" (Health and Human Rights, 2018), "Impossible “choices”: The inherent harms of regulating women’s testosterone in sport" (Journal of Bioethical Inquiry, 2018), and "Fixing bodies and shaping narratives: Epistemic injustice and the responses of medicine and bioethics to intersex human rights demands" (Clinical Ethics, 2023). These works have significantly shaped discourse in bioethics, human rights, and health policy.
