About Moses

Dr. Moses Garuba serves as Amazon Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering within Hampton University's School of Engineering, Architecture, and Aviation. Prior to his current role, he was Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Howard University's College of Engineering and Architecture, where he held leadership positions and contributed to significant research initiatives. Garuba earned his Ph.D. in 2000, M.Sc. in information technology, and B.Sc. in computer science, all from the University of London. His academic career spans database security, information security, and advanced cybersecurity applications.

Garuba's research specializations encompass cybersecurity in cloud computing, big data security, blockchain-enabled federated learning for securing Internet of Things devices, and security engineering for resilient mobile cyber-physical systems. He has authored or co-authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications, including 'AI as asset and liability: A dual-use dilemma in higher education' (2025), 'Cybersecurity in Big Data Era: From Securing Big Data to Data-Driven Security' (2016), 'A Survey on Recent Advances in Cloud Computing Security' (2018), 'Security through block vault in a blockchain enabled federated cloud framework' (2020), and 'On the Security of Information Dissemination in the Internet of Vehicles' (2017). His scholarly work has garnered over 1,140 citations. As co-principal investigator, he secured a $1 million grant from the National Science Foundation for the project 'Security Engineering for Resilient Mobile Cyber-Physical Systems' in 2018, addressing national security needs in cyber-physical protections. At Hampton University, he supervises student teams participating in high-profile competitions such as Lockheed Martin's 9th Annual Ethics in Engineering Case Competition. Garuba also serves as an ABET CAC/EAC Program Evaluator and has been involved in advisory boards and grant-funded collaborations enhancing data science and cybersecurity education at HBCUs.
