Rate My Professor Mpho Ngoepe

Professor Mpho Ngoepe is a Professor of Information Science at the University of South Africa (Unisa). He holds a bachelor’s degree and H DINF from the University of Limpopo, and a BINF (Hons), MINF and DLitt et Phil in Information Science from Unisa. His career at Unisa has included serving as Chair of the Department of Information Science, Director of the School of Arts in the College of Human Sciences, and Deputy Executive Dean of the College of Human Sciences. He was appointed Executive Director: Library and Information Services in September 2023 and has also held acting roles including Vice-Principal: Research, Postgraduate Studies, Innovation and Commercialisation.

Professor Ngoepe’s research focuses on records management, archives, libraries, audiovisual archives, oral history, auditing and corporate governance, with particular emphasis on the South African public sector and digital records preservation. He has published widely in these areas and received the Unisa Chancellor’s Prize for Excellence in Research in 2020. He has contributed to major international projects such as InterPARES Trust as director of the African team and serves on committees including the Technical Subcommittee on Encoded Archival Standards of the Society of American Archivists, the advisory council of the National Archives of South Africa, and as chair of the Gauteng Provincial Archives. Earlier professional experience includes positions with UNICEF, the Auditor-General of South Africa, Technikon Northern Gauteng, Bloemfontein Legal Deposit and the National Archives of South Africa. He has also served as journal editor for the Southern Regional Branch of the International Council on Archives and on the National Committee of the South African Society of Archivists.
