Professor Murray Print is Professor of Political Education in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at the University of Sydney, where he has conducted research and taught since 1989. He holds a PhD from Ohio State University, a BA and DipEd from the University of Western Australia, and an MA. Internationally recognized as a leader in civics and citizenship education, his research focuses on political education, democracy education, civic education, curriculum development, values and policy in civics education in the Asia-Pacific region, civics education assessment and benchmarking, youth electoral participation, civic engagement of young Australians, and competences for democratic citizenship. Print has directed key projects including the Harvard University-led Values, Policy and Civics Education in the Asia-Pacific Region, ARC-funded Civics Education Assessment and Benchmarking, the Consortium Project in Civics and Citizenship Education, the first phase of the IEA International Civics Study, and two major ARC projects on youth electoral participation and democracy engagement. From 2011 to 2015, he served as Lead Writer and Team Leader for the Australian Curriculum Civics and Citizenship, and contributed as Lead Writer to the national Discovering Democracy curriculum.
Professor Print's major publications include the authored book "Curriculum Development and Design" (Allen & Unwin, 1993), edited volume "Civic Education and Competences for Engaging Citizens in Democracies" (Sense Publishers, 2013, with Dirk Lange), and "Schools, Curriculum and Civic Education for Building Democratic Citizens" (Sense Publishers, 2015, with Dirk Lange). His scholarship has amassed 1,617 citations on Google Scholar. He received the Centenary Medal from the Australian Government in 2003 for contributions to civic education and the community, and was appointed to the College of Experts of the European Science Foundation. Print has delivered invited keynote addresses in China, Belgium, Germany, Indonesia, Taiwan, South Korea, the United States, and Canada, assessed research grants in Australia, and served as Gastprofessor at the Zentrum für LehrerInnenbildung, University of Vienna. His work has shaped policy and practice in democratic citizenship education globally.
