Dr. Naeha Sharif is a Lecturer at the Department of Computer Science & Software Engineering, School of Physics, Mathematics and Computing, University of Western Australia. Specializing in Computer Vision and Natural Language Processing, she completed her PhD in 2021 at UWA on Natural Language Description of Images, developing state-of-the-art captioning metrics and models that incorporate linguistic knowledge to enhance machines' visual understanding. She previously earned a Master of Engineering in Biomedical Engineering from Kyung Hee University on 21 August 2013. After her PhD, Sharif held a Postdoctoral Fellowship at Edith Cowan University from 2021 to 2022.
Her research interests encompass Vision-Language Models, Multimodal Learning, Automatic Image and Video Description, Captioning and Machine Translation Metrics, Medical Image Analysis, and Automatic Medical Report Generation. Publications feature in leading conferences and journals such as the European Conference on Computer Vision (ECCV), International Journal of Computer Vision (IJCV), Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL), and Winter Conference on Applications of Computer Vision (WACV). Key works include "Machine learning for abdominal aortic calcification assessment from bone density machine-derived lateral spine images" (EBioMedicine, 2023), "NNEval: Neural network based evaluation metric for image captioning" (ECCV, 2018), "Learning-based composite metrics for improved caption evaluation" (ACL, 2018), and "Machine-Learning Assessed Abdominal Aortic Calcification is Associated with Long-Term Fall and Fracture Risk in Community-Dwelling Older Australian Women" (Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, 2023).
