Nancy L. Rose is the Charles P. Kindleberger Professor of Applied Economics in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Department of Economics, specializing in Business & Economics with a focus on industrial organization. She served as Head of the Department from 2017 to 2020 and Associate Head from 2013 to 2014. Rose earned an A.B. in Economics and Government, magna cum laude, from Harvard University in 1980 and a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT in 1985. Her career at MIT began in 1985 as Assistant Professor of Applied Economics at the Sloan School of Management, advancing to Associate Professor in 1989, Professor in 1995, and transitioning to Professor of Economics in the Economics Department in 1997, attaining her current endowed professorship in 2010. She directed the National Bureau of Economic Research Program on Industrial Organization from 1990 to 2014 and served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Economic Analysis in the U.S. Department of Justice Antitrust Division from 2014 to 2016. Other appointments include Visiting Scholar at the Harvard Kennedy School in 2022 and Matina S. Horner Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Radcliffe Institute in 2021-2022.
Rose's research interests encompass industrial organization, competition policy, economics of regulation, energy economics, and transportation markets. Notable publications include “Do Markets Reduce Costs? Assessing the Impact of Regulatory Restructuring on U.S. Electric Generation Efficiency” (American Economic Review, 2007, with Fabrizio and Wolfram), “Competition and Price Dispersion in the U.S. Airline Industry” (Journal of Political Economy, 1994, with Borenstein), “Profitability and Product Quality: Economic Determinants of Airline Safety Performance” (Journal of Political Economy, 1990, with Joskow), and the edited volume Economic Regulation and Its Reform: What Have We Learned? (University of Chicago Press, 2014). She has received the Carolyn Shaw Bell Award (2020), election to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2018), Distinguished Fellow of the Industrial Organization Society (2018), MacVicar Faculty Fellow (2012-), John Simon Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship (2004-2005), Alfred P. Sloan Faculty Fellowship (1991-1993), and others. Rose holds editorial roles including Associate Editor of the Journal of Economic Perspectives (2021-) and has served as President of the Industrial Organization Society (2022-), Vice President of the American Economic Association (2013), and on various committees.
