About Naoki

Naoki Maruyama is a Professor in the Engineering Innovation Unit of the Graduate School of Regional Innovation Studies at Mie University. He earned his Bachelor's degree from the Faculty of Engineering, Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Mie University in 1986, followed by a Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering from Mie University's Graduate School of Engineering in 1988, and a Doctor of Engineering from Nagoya University in 1998. His academic career at Mie University began in 1988 as an Assistant in the Faculty of Engineering's Department of Mechanical Engineering. He advanced to Assistant Professor in 2000, Associate Professor in 2007, and Professor in the Graduate School of Engineering's Mechanical Engineering Major, holding the latter position until March 2022. Since April 2022, he has been Professor in the Engineering Innovation Unit. He currently serves as Specially Appointed Vice President (Environment) and Director of the Mie University Global Environment Center, both positions starting in April 2025, as well as Vice Director of the Graduate School of Regional Innovation Studies since April 2023. Concurrent roles include Professor at the Mie University Research Infrastructure Promotion Organization and Regional Co-creation Development Center.

Maruyama's research focuses on thermal fluid engineering, heat transfer engineering, energy conversion engineering, and environmental engineering. Key ongoing projects encompass heat transfer characteristics of refrigerant gas-liquid two-phase flows, energy-saving methods for plant cultivation environments, high-efficiency high-concentration generation of hypochlorous acid water, life cycle assessment (LCA), and life cycle CO2 (LCCO2). He has garnered major awards, including the Outstanding Paper Award at the International Workshop on Regional Innovation Studies 2025 (IWRIS2025), Best Paper Award at the 15th Thai Society of Mechanical Engineers International Conference on Mechanical Engineering (TSME-ICoME2025), Best Outstanding Paper Award at IWRIS2024, Best Paper Awards at TSME-ICoME2024 and 2022, and multiple Outstanding Paper Awards at IWRIS2023. Notable publications include "Evaluation of heat transfer performance of a heat exchanger tube mounted with an I-rib twisted tape and twisted winglets" (Scientific Reports, 2025), "Characteristics of Local Air Temperature of Serpentine Copper Pipe Heat Exchangers for Cooling Growing Crops in Greenhouses" (AgriEngineering, 2025), "Heat transfer performance evaluation of a solar air heater duct with multiple tapered V-baffles" (International Communications in Heat and Mass Transfer, 2025), and a chapter in Thermal Energy Systems (Kyoritsu Publishing, 2013). He contributes to committees such as the Mie Prefecture Environmental Council and chairs the Kuwana City Environmental Council.
