About Natalie

Dr. Natalie Cujes is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Business at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. She earned her PhD in Law from the University of Wollongong in 2013, with a thesis entitled 'Mere procedure? Federal Court case transfers to the Federal Magistrates Court and the hidden side of access to justice law reform in Australia.' Admitted as a Barrister-at-Law of the Supreme Court of New South Wales and as a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Courts of the Australian Capital Territory and Victoria, she maintains an active legal practice alongside her academic role. Previously, she served nearly a decade as a Registrar of the Federal Court of Australia and the then Federal Magistrates Court of Australia, and as Secretary of the Professional Conduct Board of the ACT Law Society for several years. She holds an appointment as Adjunct Associate Professor of Law at the University of Canberra and contributes to key Law Council of Australia committees, including the Federal Court of Australia Liaison Committee, the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia Liaison Committee, and the Australian Consumer Law Committee. Earlier, she was an elected member of the Executive Committee of the Federal Litigation and Dispute Resolution Section.

Dr. Cujes's research centers on the operations of federal courts, focusing on cost-effective, expeditious, and efficient resolution of civil disputes. She specializes in Federal Court and Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia civil practice and procedure. Her notable publications include the solo-authored book 'Litigation in the Federal Court: Promoting the Overarching Purpose' (LexisNexis Butterworths, 2015), which examines the overarching purpose of civil litigation, and co-authored editions of 'Annotated Federal Court Legislation and Rules' (LexisNexis Butterworths, 4th ed. 2023 with K. Lindgren and J. Mathieson; 2019 with K. Lindgren and D. Cremean; 2016 with D. Cremean and K.E. Lindgren; 2012 with I. Ahmed). Since 2012, she has co-contributed to the LexisNexis Butterworths 'Practice and Procedure: High Court and Federal Court' loose-leaf service. Recognized for teaching excellence, she is an Emeritus Fellow of the UNSW Scientia Education Academy and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy UK (SFHEA). She teaches Business Law, Contract Law and Commercial Acumen, and Legal Aspects of Risk Management at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
