Dr. Nathan Bogert (he/him) serves as Associate Professor of Music Performance (Saxophone) at Ball State University in the School of Music. He earned his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Saxophone in 2013 and a Master's degree in Jazz Studies in 2010, both from the University of Iowa. His principal saxophone teachers were Eugene Rousseau, Kenneth Tse, George Wolfe, and Ron Jones, with additional studies alongside Claude Delangle, Timothy McAllister, and Jean-Marie Londeix. Earlier in his career, Dr. Bogert held teaching positions at Cornell College and Grinnell College in Iowa. He began his saxophone studies at Ball State University, where he was named the 2007 Yamaha National Young Performing Artist as an undergraduate student majoring in saxophone performance. His students at Ball State have achieved success as prize winners in international competitions and now teach at universities and high schools across the United States.
Recognized as a standout saxophonist of his generation, Dr. Bogert performs across five continents as a soloist, recitalist, and ensemble member in both classical and jazz settings. He has appeared as soloist with the Banda de Conciertos de San José in Costa Rica, top wind ensembles and orchestras at Ball State University and the University of Iowa, and various other orchestras and bands. In duo with pianist Dr. Michael Seregow, he has presented recitals in Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras, and throughout the United States. Dr. Bogert champions contemporary music, premiering works by composers such as Martin Bresnick, Karalyn Schubring, Aaron Perrine, Remy LeBoeuf, Kenji Bunch, Benjamin Fuhrman, Ted King-Smith, Amy Kaplan, Jody Nagel, and Israel Neumann. In jazz, he leads the band Groove Theory, praised by critic Scott Yanow as mixing elements of John Coltrane and Grover Washington Jr., and has shared stages with artists including Wayne Bergeron, Ted Nash, Jimmy Greene, Marcus Printup, Andy Martin, Buddy DeFranco, and Denis DiBlasio of the Carmen Bradford Big Band. His performances have earned acclaim from Fanfare Magazine as 'of the highest order' and designating him 'a master of his instrument.' Dr. Bogert's honors include first overall in the 2007 Yamaha Young Performing Artists competition, first prizes in the 2012 North American Saxophone Alliance classical solo competition and 2012 Music Teachers National Association young artist competition in New York City, second prizes in the 2010 NASA quartet and solo competitions as baritone saxophonist of Axius Saxophone Quartet, first prize in MTNA national chamber music with Axius, and a silver medal at the Fischoff Chamber Music Competition. He is a Yamaha Performing Artist and Vandoren Diamond Artist, performing exclusively on Yamaha saxophones and Vandoren equipment.
