Nathan Whalen serves as Senior Instructor II of Spanish in the Department of Romance Languages at the University of Oregon's Schnitzer School of Global Studies and Languages, part of the College of Arts and Sciences. He earned his B.A. in Political Science and Spanish in 1999 and his M.A. in Spanish in 2001, both from the University of Oregon. Having dedicated 24 years to the institution, Whalen has focused his career on Spanish language instruction, maintaining an office at 422 Friendly Hall with phone 541-346-4257 and office hours on Tuesdays from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. and by appointment.
Whalen has demonstrated exceptional leadership in faculty governance and labor representation. He represented Romance Languages on the Senate Executive Committee during the 2017-2018 term. As a key figure in United Academics of the University of Oregon (AAUP-AFT Local 3209), he served as Humanities Representative, member of the Organizing and Membership Committee, and Chair of the Grievance and Contract Administration Committee. In recent contract negotiations, he acted as Lead Negotiator, signing mediation packages and proposals in early 2025 for the collective bargaining agreement effective through 2027. Currently, he holds the position of Contracts Director at United Academics. Additionally, Whalen contributed to university leadership as a member of the Presidential Search Committee, recognized for his twenty years of service in Romance Languages. His sustained involvement underscores his influence on academic policy, faculty welfare, and institutional decision-making at the University of Oregon.
