Rate My Professor Neil Williams

Dr Neil Williams is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Science & Technology at Nottingham Trent University. He holds a PhD from Nottingham Trent University, with research focused on the aetiology of asthma and novel dietary interventions for managing exercise-induced bronchoconstriction. His academic background includes an MSc in Sport and Exercise Physiology. Dr Williams teaches across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in the Department of Sport Science, serving as module leader for Current Topics in Sport and Exercise Nutrition.

His research specializations centre on exercise physiology and nutrition, with particular emphasis on the role of gut microbiota in respiratory disease and exercise performance, prebiotic interventions for asthma severity and athlete health, and immune nutrition strategies. Dr Williams leads the Musculoskeletal Physiology and Nutrition Research Group and is a member of the Sport, Health and Performance Enhancement Research Group. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, including studies on the effects of omega-3 fatty acids and prebiotics on hyperpnoea-induced bronchoconstriction published in the British Journal of Nutrition in 2017 and 2016. Prior to his current role, he worked as an Exercise and Thermal Physiologist at QinetiQ Ltd and as an Occupational Physiologist at Optimal Performance Ltd, contributing to projects for the Ministry of Defence and supporting athletes in extreme environments such as the Marathon des Sables. He is an Academic Associate with the Sport and Exercise Nutrition Register and regularly disseminates research at international conferences as an invited speaker on athlete health, asthma, and nutrition.
