About Nicholas

Professor Nicholas Biddle is Head of the School of Politics and International Relations at the Australian National University College of Arts and Social Sciences. He holds the position of Professor of Economics and Public Policy. Prior to his current appointment, Professor Biddle served as Deputy Director and Associate Director of the ANU Centre for Social Research and Methods, where he led the methods and survey program and directed the Policy Experiments Lab. He previously worked as a Senior Research Officer and Assistant Director in the Methodology Division of the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Professor Biddle is a Fellow of the Tax and Transfer Policy Institute and has held a Senior Fellow position at the Centre for Aboriginal Economic Policy Research.

Professor Biddle earned a Bachelor of Economics (Honours) from the University of Sydney, a Master of Education from Monash University, and a PhD in Public Policy from the Australian National University, with his doctoral thesis examining the benefits of and participation in education among Indigenous Australians. As a quantitative social scientist, his work focuses on public policy, economics, education, demography, elections, behavioural economics, and Indigenous studies. He has contributed extensively to ANUpoll surveys and research on topics including life satisfaction, democracy, financial stress, and public attitudes toward government and institutions. His academic appointments and research leadership have established him as a key figure in Australian social research and policy analysis.
