About Nick

Dr. Nick Lan serves as Clinical Senior Lecturer in Internal Medicine at the UWA Medical School, University of Western Australia, and as a Cardiologist in the Cardiometabolic service at Fiona Stanley Hospital. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy from the UWA Medical School, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery with Honours (MBBS Hons) from the University of Western Australia, Master of Clinical Ultrasound (MClinUS), Master of Clinical Research with Distinction (MClinRes Dist), and Master of Science in Preventative Cardiovascular Medicine (MSc). Lan is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (FRACP), Certified Cardiometabolic Health Provider (CCHP), and holds certification from the National Board of Echocardiography (ASCeXAM). His academic and clinical career began with graduation from UWA, followed by physician training in cardiology in Western Australia, a clinical fellowship in endocrinology and diabetes, and advanced training in preventive cardiology and cardiac imaging.

Lan's research specializes in preventive cardiology, cardiometabolic medicine, and cardiac imaging, with over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles authored, more than 50 as first author, including a book chapter on lipid management in diabetes mellitus. Key publications encompass 'Associations between cardiovascular disease and its risk factors with hearing loss—a cross-sectional analysis' (2018), 'The effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors on left ventricular function: current evidence and future directions' (2019), 'High-sensitivity cardiac troponin I improves cardiovascular risk prediction in older men: HIMS (the health in men study)' (2019), 'Evaluation of an artificial intelligence coronary artery calcium scoring model from computed tomography' (2023), and 'Empagliflozin and left ventricular diastolic function following an acute coronary syndrome in patients with type 2 diabetes' (2021). He contributes as Section Editor for Heart, Lung and Circulation and serves on the Clinical Council of the Australian Atherosclerosis Society. Lan has received the Western Australian Health Research Fellowship, Strachan Memorial Prize from the Raine Medical Research Foundation, and current support from the Western Australian Future Health Research and Innovation Fund and Athelstan Saw Clinician Researcher Training Scholarship, underscoring his impact in advancing cardiometabolic health research.
