Rate My Professor Nick Turner

Professor Nicholas Turner is Professor of Chemical Biology at the University of Manchester. He obtained his DPhil in 1985 with Professor Sir Jack Baldwin and held a Royal Society Junior Research Fellowship from 1985 to 1987, including time at Harvard University with Professor George Whitesides. He was appointed lecturer at Exeter University in 1987, moved to the University of Edinburgh in 1995 as Reader and became Professor in 1998, and joined the University of Manchester in 2004 as Professor of Chemical Biology and Director of the Centre of Excellence in Biocatalysis (CoEBio3).

His research focuses on biocatalysis, including the development and directed evolution of enzymes for applications in organic synthesis. He co-founded Ingenza Ltd and has coordinated major projects such as sLoLa, CHEM21 and BIOOX. Turner was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 2020. His awards include the ACS Catalysis Lectureship in 2018, the RSC Organic Stereochemistry Award in 2017, the RSC Industrial Organic Award in 2009, the Corday-Morgan Medal in 1996 and the RSC Carbohydrate Chemistry Award in 1992. He has also received the University of Manchester Researcher of the Year Award in 2015 and a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award in 2011. Turner serves as co-director of SYNBIOCHEM and has held an ERC Advanced Grant.
