Associate Professor Niharika Garud is an academic in the Department of Management and Marketing within the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Melbourne. She holds the position of Associate Dean (Engagement), where she oversees the faculty's executive education portfolio and collaborates closely with the Melbourne School of Professional and Continuing Education. Garud also serves as the Hub Coordinator for the Melbourne Health and Business Research Hub, leading cross-disciplinary research on healthcare management and marketing. This hub examines topics including healthcare workforce wellbeing, such as workplace abuse and its impacts on outcomes; efficiency in preventive healthcare systems, including resource allocation and supply chain management; organization and individual prevention behaviors; healthcare technology and access disparities; indigenous health equity; diversity and inclusion in healthcare; mental health prevention; safety in health systems; and broader societal welfare dimensions.
Her research specializations encompass organizational psychology, technology and innovation management, judgment and decision-making, entrepreneurship, behavioural operations, behavioral strategy, R&D management, and engineering management. Garud has contributed to scholarly literature through publications in prominent journals. Notable works include 'The Paradoxical Effect of Employee Monitoring on Deviance' (2021), 'Motivated to disengage: The ethical consequences of goal displacement on deviance' (2020), 'To What Do I Owe This Visit? The Drawbacks and Benefits of In-Person Monitoring' (2022), 'Catalyzing social innovation: is entrepreneurial bricolage always beneficial?' (2018), 'It's not you, it's them: Social influences on trust propensity and trust development' (2018), and 'Exploring the effects of institutional logics on entrepreneurial opportunity evaluation decisions' (2024). Her scholarship has accumulated over 642 citations. In 2020, she was awarded the Dean's Research Award for Exceptional Distinction in Research Engagement and Partnerships (Level A-C) for the project 'Engagement of Workforce and Patient Outcomes,' developed with collaborators including Dr Victor Sojo and Prof Simon Bell in partnership with Safer Care Victoria, VMIA, VPSC, and the State Government of Victoria. Garud is affiliated with the Centre for Asian Business and Economics.
