About Nikhil

Dr. Nikhil Gupta serves as an Assistant Professor in the Centre for VLSI and Nano Technology at Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology, Nagpur, a position he has held since April 2018. He obtained his Ph.D. in Electronics Engineering from Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur, in 2014. His research focuses on opto-electronics, photonics, solar cells, electro-optics, electromagnetics, nanotechnology, renewable energy, and nano-lithography. Gupta's work centers on photonic crystal structures and nanostructures to improve light trapping, absorption enhancement, and efficiency in solar cells, including thin-film GaAs, perovskite-silicon tandem, and InGaN/GaN superlattice-based devices. He has authored over 40 publications in reputed journals.

Among his key publications are 'Dense wavelength division demultiplexing using photonic crystal waveguides based on cavity resonance' (Optik, 2014), 'Analysis of Light Trapping in thin film GaAs solar cells using 2D Photonic Crystal Structures at front surface' (IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics, 2017), 'Absorption enhancement in hole Interface layer free perovskite solar cells using periodic photonic nanostructures' (Optics & Laser Technology, 2019), 'Design and fabrication of InGaN/GaN superlattice-based solar cell using photonic crystal structure' (Journal of Nanophotonics, 2018), 'Nanostructured Anti Reflection Coating for Absorption Enhancement in Perovskite Silicon Tandem Solar Cells' (Optical Materials Express, 2023), and 'Design and Fabrication of a Photodetector for UV/Blue Wavelength Region for Low-Light Intensity Levels Using InGaN/GaN Superlattice Structure' (IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices, 2024). Gupta holds Indian patents, including one for a novel Perovskite-Silicon Tandem Solar Cell design developed with Prof. Raghavendra Deshmukh. He has secured research funding, such as a DST-sponsored project worth 22 lakh rupees with Dr. Susanta Kumar Nayak. Gupta organized the Workshop on Research and Applications in Photonics at VNIT and serves on the institute's website committee. As a visiting researcher at Purdue University under the IUSSTF WARI program, he engages in international collaborations. In 2024, he was elevated to Optica Senior Member, recognizing his contributions to photonics and solar energy technologies.
