Dr. Nimalika Fernando Thudugala Mudalige is a Lecturer in the School of Electrical Engineering, Computing and Mathematical Sciences within the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Curtin University. Her comprehensive academic background includes a PhD from Curtin University, an MPhil from the University of Moratuwa, an MSc from Keele University, a BSc from the University of Colombo, and a Graduate Diploma in Counselling from Colombo. With more than 20 years of experience in higher education, she previously worked as an academic at the Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology from 2001 to 2016. Following this, she joined Curtin University as a PhD research student before advancing to her current lecturing position.
Dr. Fernando Thudugala Mudalige's research focuses on geo-informatics, geospatial science, location-based services, and indoor navigation systems, with a particular emphasis on context-aware models for vision-impaired people as part of the Assistive Technology Research Group. Her Google Scholar profile indicates 79 citations. Key publications include "Route planning methods in indoor navigation tools for vision impaired persons: a systematic review" (2021), "Modelling indoor spaces to support vision impaired navigation using an ontology based approach" (2019), "A trilateral influence model for online shopping" (2017), "Landmarks based route planning and linear path generation for mobile navigation applications" (2016), "Geo-enabled FOSS tool supports for immediate flood disaster response planning" (2015), "Context-aware Navigation Model supporting Way-finding of Vision Impaired People in Indoor Environments" (2014), "Platform independent Location Based Service for finding Pharmacies using Open Source GIS tools" (2013), "GIS Enabled Travel Assistance System for Public Transportation" (2012), "Electronic Patient Record System for a Psychiatry Unit in Sri Lanka" (2010), and "A framework to develop location based services applications using OGC map services" (2010). She serves as unit coordinator for Introduction to Software Engineering (ISAD1000) and Database Systems (ISYS2014). Additionally, she has engaged in open-source geospatial projects, was named GeoAmbassador of the month in 2016, and appeared on the "Rough Compute" podcast to discuss assessment for learning.
