Nina Granqvist serves as Professor of Management and Head of the Department of Management Studies at Aalto University School of Business. She earned her Doctoral degree in Business and Economics from Helsinki School of Economics in 2007 and her Master's degree in Business and Economics from the University of Tampere in 2001. Before entering academia, she gained professional experience as a consultant at Accenture and worked briefly in the media sector at Bertelsmann in Germany. Her research centers on the emergence and development of new industries and market categories, investigating how novel ideas, trends, and technologies progress from peripheral positions to mainstream acceptance. Employing theoretical lenses such as institutional theory, market categorization, temporality, narratives, and agency in nascent fields, her work features collaborative, multidisciplinary studies utilizing extensive qualitative data from domains including quantum computing, nanotechnology, cultural industries, food trends, and impact investing.
Granqvist's scholarship appears in leading journals like Academy of Management Journal, Organization Science, Organization Studies, and Journal of Management Studies. Notable publications include "Chasing Storms: Temporal Work to Foster Group Engagement under Uncertainty" with Derin Kent (Academy of Management Journal, 2025), "Temporal Institutional Work" with Robin Gustafsson (Academy of Management Journal, 2016), "Hedging Your Bets: Explaining Executives' Market Labeling Strategies in Nanotechnology" with Stine Grodal and Jennifer L. Woolley (Organization Science, 2013), and "Rage against Self-Replicating Machines: Framing Science and Fiction in the U.S. Nanotechnology Field" with Juha Laurila (Organization Studies, 2011). She has garnered significant recognition, including the Scholar of the Year award at Aalto University School of Business (2017), the Organization Studies Best Paper Award (Roland Calori Prize, 2013), the EGOS Best Paper Award (2009), and the Best Paper Award at the EIBA 2017 Milan Conference. In academic service, she is Senior Editor for Organization Studies and serves on the editorial boards of Academy of Management Journal, Organization Theory, and Research in the Sociology of Organizations. Granqvist leads market activities in the Finnish Quantum Flagship, participates in the OECD Global Forum on Technology expert focus group on quantum technologies, teaches strategy courses in Aalto's master's and executive education programs, and supervises doctoral students internationally.
