Niranjan Casinader is an Adjunct Senior Lecturer in the Faculty of Education, School of Education Culture & Society at Monash University, having retired from full-time employment there in November 2020. Originally trained as a geographer, he worked as a teacher and educational leader in secondary schools and international education for over 30 years before entering tertiary education. At Monash University, he taught and researched across postgraduate and undergraduate courses in curriculum, assessment, pedagogy, and Humanities education. His tertiary leadership roles included Acting Director of Initial Teacher Education Programs and Course Leader for Primary and Secondary Education programs at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Casinader maintains a focused research and publication program alongside occasional consultancy work post-retirement.
His research centers on three principal strands: the impact of transnationalism and globalisation on education, particularly culture's influence on curriculum, pedagogy, and thinking; inquiry-based teaching of Geography and Humanities subjects in schools, emphasizing transdisciplinary approaches; and education's role in British colonial policy with relevance to contemporary society. Key publications include books such as Transculturalism and Teacher Capacity: Professional Readiness in the Globalised Age (Routledge, 2020), Transnationalism, Education and Empowerment: Latent Legacies of Empire (Routledge, 2017), Culture, Transnational Education and Thinking: Case Studies in Global Schooling (Routledge, 2014), and Inquiry Based Teaching and Learning Across Disciplines: Comparative Theory and Practice in Schools (Palgrave Macmillan, 2017, with Gillian Kidman). Recent chapters encompass Reimagining multiculturalism: a transcultural perspective on music education (Edward Elgar Publishing, 2025), School alumni associations in modern Australia as transcultural conduits of migrant identity: the Sri Lankan experience (South Asian Diaspora, 2025), and Transnationalism (Elsevier, 2023). Casinader has received the ACEL Fellowship (2016), Early Career Researcher Award (2013), Early Career Researcher Fellowship (2014), Award for Geographical Education (1998), and John Daugherty Memorial Award (2005). He has delivered invited presentations at the ACEL President's Research Seminar Series (2019), GU-CGE/UCL Institute of Education Geography Education Conference (2019), and European Conference for Education Research (2019).
