Dr. Norma Juma is the Brenneman Professor of Business Strategy and Professor of Management in the Brenneman School of Business at Washburn University, where she joined as an Assistant Professor in 2005, advanced to Associate Professor in 2011, and was promoted to full Professor in 2017. Prior to her tenure at Washburn, she served as a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the University of Texas at Arlington from 2001 to 2005, Lecturer at Maseno University in Kenya from 1997 to 2001, and Small Business Development Consultant at Natrack Network Consultancy in Kenya during the same period. Juma earned her Ph.D. in Strategic Management and International Business from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2005, Master of Business Administration in Management from Pondicherry University in 1997, and Bachelor of Business Management from Mysore University in 1995. She also holds Certificates of Teaching and Learning from CTEL in 2014-2015 and 2020-2021.
Her research interests include succession planning in family businesses, the impact of intellectual capital on high-tech ventures, indigenous entrepreneurship, and social identity among emigrant entrepreneurs, with additional focus on sustainability and entrepreneurship. Key publications feature 'The Relationship between Intellectual Capital and New Venture Performance: An Empirical Investigation of the Moderating Role of the Environment' (International Journal of Innovation and Technology Management, 2006, with J. McGee), 'Intellectual Capital & Inter-Firm Collaboration: Effects on Economic Performance of New Venture High-Tech Firms' (International Journal of Innovation Management, 2004, with G.T. Juma has received the Roy Myers Excellence in Research Award, the highest research honor for full-time faculty at Washburn University, Emerald Literati Award, Kaw Valley Bank Excellence in Research Award (twice), Overall Best Paper Award at the International Academy of African Business and Development Conference (2011), Emerald/ALCS African Management Research Fund Award (2010), and other best paper awards at international conferences. She teaches undergraduate and graduate courses such as International Business, Strategic Management, and Legal and Ethical Issues, incorporating research findings and technologies like artificial intelligence to promote student growth and real-world application.
