Oded Meyer is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Georgetown University. He earned both his M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh, completing his doctorate in 2000 with a dissertation entitled 'Cumulative Meta-Analysis of Clinical Trials: From a Retrospective Exercise to a Dynamic Procedure,' advised by Satish Iyengar. Before joining Georgetown University, Meyer contributed extensively to the Open Learning Initiative (OLI) at Carnegie Mellon University, where he helped develop scientifically-based online learning environments for statistics courses. At Georgetown, he has served in roles supporting innovative pedagogy, including as a Scholar in Residence at the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS).
Meyer's primary academic interests lie in statistics pedagogy, with a focus on combining online materials with face-to-face instructions for introductory statistics. He collaborated with Parina Patel of the School of Foreign Service on an Initiative on Technology-Enhanced Learning (ITEL) project, creating six web-based modules using the OLI platform during summers 2013 and 2014. These modules reinforced lecture material with hands-on activities using real political science data, launched in subsequent fall semesters for both graduate and undergraduate students. Student feedback was overwhelmingly positive: participants found the modules easy to understand, beneficial for learning Stata, and effective in enhancing comprehension of statistical concepts. Students appreciated the self-paced nature and ability to revisit content, leading Patel to continue their use and consider pre-class implementation for more in-class practice time. Meyer presented project findings at the 9th International Conference on Teaching Statistics (ICOTS9) in 2014, including 'Using the Open Learning Initiative (OLI) to Support Teaching Statistics to International Politics Students' with Patel and 'Using Carnegie Mellon's Open Learning Initiative (OLI) to support the teaching of introductory statistics: experiences, assessments and lessons learned' with Marsha Lovett. His publications include 'The Open Learning Initiative: Measuring the Effectiveness of the OLI Statistics Course in Accelerating Student Learning' in the Journal of Interactive Media in Education (2008, with Marsha Lovett and Candace Thille, 255 citations), 'Implementing A Computerized Tutor In A Statistical Reasoning Course: Getting The Big Picture' (2002, with Marsha Lovett, 10 citations), and others on statistical literacy and blended learning for introductory statistics, totaling 271 citations.
