About Ole

Ole Windahl Pedersen is Professor of Environmental Law in the Department of Law at Aarhus University, where he joined in 2021. Prior to this appointment, he held positions at Newcastle Law School for 14 years, including Director of Research, REF UOA Coordinator, and member of the school's Executive Committee. Pedersen earned his PhD and has established himself as a leading scholar in environmental law. His research focuses on environmental regulation, energy law, the intersection of environmental issues and human rights, environmental adjudication, and the theoretical foundations and scholarship of environmental law.

Pedersen has co-authored key textbooks such as Environmental Law (9th edition, Oxford University Press, 2017, with S. Bell, D. McGillivray, E. Lees, and E. Stokes) and Environmental Adjudication (with E. Lees). He also edited Perspectives on Environmental Law Scholarship. Among his influential articles are 'European environmental human rights and environmental rights: A long time coming' (Georgetown International Environmental Law Review, 2008), 'Environmental principles and environmental justice' (Environmental Law Review, 2010), 'An international environmental court and international legalism' (Journal of Environmental Law, 2012), and 'The European Court of Human Rights and international environmental law' (2018). Recent publications include 'Climate advisory committees in European climate governance: Expertise, representation and co-production' (Review of European, Comparative and International Environmental Law, 2025), 'Disruption, special climate considerations, and striking the balance' (American Journal of International Law, 2025), and 'Energy policy: Integration by stealth and crisis-driven change' (Oxford University Press, 2025). His scholarship, with over 3,000 citations, has made significant contributions to understanding climate governance, environmental rights, and regulatory frameworks.
