Olena Mazurenko, MD, PhD, MS, is an Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Health Policy and Management at the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, Indiana University. She earned a PhD in Health Services Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, an MS in International Health from Humboldt University in Germany, and an MD in Internal Medicine from Bogomolets National Medical University in Ukraine. Her career includes roles as Research Assistant at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (2009-2012), Tenure-track Assistant Professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (2012-2015), and at Indiana University as Visiting Assistant Professor (2015-2016), Tenure-track Assistant Professor (2016-2020), and Associate Professor since 2020. Additional appointments include Affiliated Scientist at the Regenstrief Institute since 2016 and Adjunct Associate Professor at Trinity College Dublin.
Mazurenko's research interests encompass health policy and management, clinical decision support systems, chronic non-cancer pain management, opioid and substance misuse, health information technology, policy evaluation, social determinants of health, and patient-centered care in primary care, hospitals, and emergency departments. Funded by the National Institutes of Health and Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, her work appears in journals including Health Affairs, PLOS ONE, JAMIA Open, and Applied Clinical Informatics. Key publications include 'The effects of Medicaid expansion under the ACA: a systematic review' (Health Affairs, 2018), 'High-deductible health plans reduce health care cost and utilization, including use of needed preventive services' (Health Affairs, 2017), 'Integrating a risk prediction score in a clinical decision support to identify patients with health-related social needs in the emergency department' (JAMIA Open, 2025), and 'Learning from Misses: Evaluating a Clinical Decision Support for Chronic Pain Management in Primary Care' (Applied Clinical Informatics, 2025). A 2023-2024 U.S. Fulbright Scholar, she partnered with Irish researchers on national clinical guidelines for chronic pain management. Awards include the Distinguished Service Award from the Academy of Management Health Care Management Division (2019), Outstanding Researcher Award from UNLV School of Community Health Sciences (2015), and KL2 Scholar from the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (2017-2019). She has served on editorial boards for Health Care Management Review and the Association of University Programs in Health Administration, and multiple university committees including search committees, PhD advisory, and MHA program committees. Mazurenko teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in global health, strategic management, and research methods, and mentors junior faculty, doctoral students, and medical trainees.
