About Omar

Dr. Omar Khadeer Hussain, Professor Omar Hussain, is a Professor in the School of Business at UNSW Canberra, University of New South Wales. He earned a Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in 2002, a Master of Research in Computer Science from La Trobe University in 2004, and a Doctor of Philosophy in Information Management from Curtin University in 2008. Previously a Senior Research Fellow at Curtin University, he joined UNSW Canberra in February 2014 as Lecturer, advancing to Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor, and Professor. He currently serves as Director of the Supply Chain Sustainment Research Group and Deputy Head of School (Research).

Professor Hussain's research focuses on logistics and supply chain management, distributed and grid systems, decision support and group support systems with applications to logistics, supply chain risk management, knowledge synthesis from data for business decision making, risk management, cloud service management, predictive analytics, and informed business decisions. He has supervised nine PhD students to completion. His achievements include the Australian Research Council Australian Postdoctoral Industry Fellowship in 2011, Curtin Business School New Researcher of the Year for 2012 (awarded 2013), Curtin Business School Early Career Researcher Prize (2013), Chancellor's thesis commendation from Curtin University (2008), Master's Prize in Computer Science from La Trobe University (2004), and a 2023 ARC grant of $349,108 for supply chain impact modeling.

Influential publications include "Support vector regression with chaos-based firefly algorithm for stock market price forecasting" (Applied Soft Computing, 2013), "A survey on chatbot implementation in customer service industry through deep neural networks" (IEEE ICEBE, 2018), "ZBWM: The Z-number extension of Best Worst Method and its application for supplier development" (Expert Systems with Applications, 2018), "Cloud service selection: State-of-the-art and future research directions" (Journal of Network and Computer Applications, 2014), "Adaptive identification of supply chain disruptions through reinforcement learning" (Expert Systems with Applications, 2024), and "Disruption-resilient multi-echelon supply chains: a model integrating carbon emissions and social welfare investments" (International Journal of Production Research, 2025). His scholarship exceeds 8,000 Google Scholar citations.
