About Orlando

Orlando Simonetti, PhD, holds the John W. Wolfe Professorship in Cardiovascular Research and serves as Professor of Radiology and Professor of Internal Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Medicine. He is Vice Chair of Research in the Department of Radiology, Director of the Center for Imaging Excellence, Co-Director of the Center for Cardiovascular Imaging Research, Director of the Division of Imaging Sciences, and Research Director of Advanced Cardiovascular Imaging. Simonetti earned his BS and MS degrees from The Ohio State University and his PhD from Case Western Reserve University. Throughout a career spanning more than 30 years, he has dedicated his efforts to advancing cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) technology. His pioneering developments include black-blood turbo spin echo techniques, late gadolinium enhancement, steady-state free precession cine imaging, self-gating methods, T2 mapping, exercise CMR, and low-field CMR, which have expanded the applications of CMR for imaging the heart and blood vessels more effectively.

Simonetti has authored more than 200 peer-reviewed articles, including recent works such as "Feasibility of Golden Angle Spiral Real-Time Phase Contrast MRI at 0.55T: A Single-Center Prospective Study" (2026, Bioengineering), "Prospective Respiratory Motion Correction Using Machine Learning and Pilot Tone (PROMPT) in Cardiac MRI" (2026, Magnetic Resonance in Medicine), and "A ketogenic-promoting beverage acutely elevates cardiac function and myocardial blood flow compared to placebo in adults: A cardiac MRI investigation" (2025, Physiological Reports). He serves as principal investigator on NIH/NHLBI grants for low-field CMR in obese patients and other projects, and co-investigator on grants related to valvular heart disease and atrial fibrillation. Simonetti served as President and first CEO of the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (SCMR), earning the SCMR Gold Medal in 2019 and Master designation. His honors include the Academy for Radiology & Biomedical Imaging Research Council of Distinguished Investigators (2024), Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute Distinguished Mentor (2024 and 2010), Fellow of the American Heart Association (2012), Fellow of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (2010), and ISMRM Outstanding Teacher Awards (2008 and 2006). He regularly presents research at national and international conferences.
