About Osvaldo

Osvaldo Novais de Oliveira Junior is a physicist at the Instituto de Física de São Carlos (IFSC) of the Universidade de São Paulo (USP). He earned a BSc in Physics in 1982 and an MSc in Applied Physics in 1984 from USP, followed by a PhD in Electronic Engineering from the University of Wales, Bangor, in 1990. He has served as Professor Titular at IFSC/USP and was Director of the institute from 2022 to 2026. He is also coordinator of the National Institute for Sustainable Organic Electronics. In 2019, he received the Doctor Honoris Causa degree from the Universidade Federal do Mato Grosso do Sul.

Professor Oliveira’s research focuses on the fabrication and properties of ultrathin films using Langmuir-Blodgett and self-assembly techniques, with applications in nanotechnology, organic electronics, conductive and luminescent polymers, nonlinear optics, sensors, and biosensors. He has contributed to computational linguistics through his role in establishing the Núcleo Interinstitucional de Linguística Computacional (NILC) and developing tools such as a grammar checker for Brazilian Portuguese. He has published approximately 760 papers in refereed journals, with over 36,900 citations on Google Scholar (h-index 90 as of May 2026), along with book chapters, two outreach books, and an edited volume on scientific writing. He holds 13 patents and has supervised 53 MSc and PhD students. Professor Oliveira served as president of the Brazilian Materials Research Society (SBPMat) from 2016 to 2020 and as President of the International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) in 2023–2024. He is a member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences and executive editor of ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces. In 2006, he received the Scopus Prize for productivity in publications and citations.
