Rate My Professor Panos Ipeirotis

Panagiotis G. Ipeirotis, known as Panos Ipeirotis, is the Merchants’ Council Professor of Technology and Business at the Leonard N. Stern School of Business at New York University. He joined the faculty in 2004 and serves as Doctoral Program Coordinator for Information Systems in the Department of Technology, Operations, and Statistics. He holds courtesy appointments at the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences and the NYU Center for Data Science. Ipeirotis earned a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Columbia University in 2004, an M.Sc. in Computer Science from Columbia University in 2001, and a B.Sc. in Computer Engineering and Informatics from the University of Patras in Greece in 1999.

His research centers on crowdsourcing and human computation, data quality and data mining, the economics of online information systems, human-AI collaboration, online labor markets, and applied machine learning. Ipeirotis received the Lagrange Prize in Complex Systems in 2015 and the ACM SIGKDD Test of Time Award in 2020. Additional honors include the NSF CAREER Award in 2007, a $1.5 million Google Focused Research Award in 2012, the INFORMS ISS Best Paper Award in Management Science in 2014, and multiple best paper awards from conferences such as ACM SIGMOD, IEEE ICDE, WWW, and AAAI HCOMP. He is founding co-Editor-in-Chief of the journal Collective Intelligence and has served as technical program co-chair for The Web Conference 2018, AAAI HCOMP 2025, and ACM EC 2012. Key publications include papers in Management Science and proceedings of KDD, WSDM, and other venues. Beyond academia, he co-founded the AI consulting firm Detectica, which was acquired in 2019, and has held roles including Academic-in-Residence at Upwork and research positions at Google and Meta Reality Labs. He collaborated with the World Bank on a 2015 report on digital labor markets.
