Patricia Marquez is Professor of Social Innovation at the University of San Diego, where she served as Dean of the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies from 2014 to 2023 and as Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Innovation. She joined the University of San Diego in 2007 through the Knauss School of Business, teaching courses including Business and Society, Global Social Entrepreneurship, and Business and Social Innovation. Previously, Marquez was a professor of management from 1995 to 2007 and dean from 2003 to 2005 at IESA, a school of business in Caracas, Venezuela. She also served as Cisneros Scholar at Harvard University's David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies and as a visiting professor at ESADE Business School in Barcelona, Spain.
Marquez holds a BA from Bowdoin College and an MA and PhD in socio-cultural anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley. Her academic interests center on social innovation, the integration of business with peacebuilding and social change, base-of-the-pyramid markets, and ethical practices in management. Notable publications include the co-edited volume Strategies and Best Practices in Social Innovation: An Institutional Perspective (2018) and contributions to Socially Inclusive Business: Engaging the Poor Through Market Initiatives in Iberoamerica. She received the 2011 Aspen Institute Faculty Pioneer Award and the 2017 San Diego Rotary Peacemaker of the Year award. Marquez delivered a TEDxUSD talk entitled Can Universities Be Central to World Change? and serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Social Entrepreneurship. She is also a board director at PriceSmart, Inc.
