About Patrick

Patrick Beale serves as Adjunct Professor in the UWA School of Design at the University of Western Australia. He was formerly Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts at UWA, appointed in 2000, during which he oversaw the establishment of a new Professional Practice stream in the School of Architecture. Beale holds an Architectural Association Diploma from London and is a Registered Architect with the RAIA. As Director of Advanced Timber Concepts Studio (ATC Studio), he leads projects emphasizing sustainable timber design. His academic career includes roles as Assistant Professor in the School of Architecture, Landscape and Visual Arts.

Beale's research focuses on advanced timber concepts in furniture and structural design, innovative architectural representation techniques, housing production paradigms for remote and rural economies, design processes for complex structures in isolated locations, and inclusive building environments for the vision impaired. Key publications include the chapter 'Advanced Timber Concepts and the Design of Furniture and Structures: Innovative Techniques of Representation in Architectural Design' (2019), conference paper 'Housing production in remote and rural developing economies. A new industrial paradigm for the construction industry' (2016), 'Design Processes involved in the Delivery of a Complex Architectural Structure to a Remote Location' (2015), article 'Hidden design: An inquiry into the design of inclusive building environments and digital interface design for the vision impaired' (2005), 'Development of a light weight flat pack timber wall and floor pan' (2016, conference paper), and 'From Forrest Floor to Retail Showroom: The Collaborative Redesign of the Furniture Manufacturing Industry in Western Australia' (2004). He curated the exhibition 'Woods Bagot: College of Technology in Doha Qatar' at UWA and contributed to outputs such as 'Perenjori House 2 by ATC Studio'. In 2020, Beale received a Commendation for Sustainable Architecture in the National Architecture Awards for the Pingelly Recreation and Cultural Centre, recognizing innovative low-impact timber solutions.
