D. Patrick Saxon serves as Professor of Educational Leadership and Director of the Doctoral Program in Developmental Education Administration in the Department of Educational Leadership at Sam Houston State University since 2012. He holds an Ed.D. in Developmental Education Administration from Grambling State University (2011), an M.B.A. from Appalachian State University (1990), and a B.S.B.A. in Marketing and Management from Appalachian State University (1988). Prior to his current role, Saxon was Assistant Director at the National Center for Developmental Education at Appalachian State University from 2001 to 2012, Coordinator of Research and Special Projects there from 1990 to 2000, Instructor in the College of Business in 2000, and held adjunct positions at Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute from 1994 to 2009. His administrative experience includes serving as Title III External Evaluator for Florida State College at Jacksonville from 2012 to 2017 and Kellogg Institute Advisor at Appalachian State University since 2008.
Saxon's research focuses on developmental education, encompassing student assessment and placement, remediation costs and outcomes, instructional practices, and program administration. He has co-authored books including 'What Works: Research-Based Recommendations for Administrators' with H.R. Boylan (2012, DevEd Press) and 'Creating Quality Developmental Education: Top Ten Actions Community College Administrators Can Take to Improve Developmental Education: A Guide' with H.R. Boylan (2009, National Center for Developmental Education and Texas Association for Developmental Education). Saxon is an Executive Board Member of the National Association for Developmental Education since 2011 and has contributed invited editorials and served on accreditation review committees.
