Emeritus Professor Paul Abbott AO, BDSc (University of Western Australia, 1980), MDS (Endodontics, University of Adelaide, 1986), and DDSc (University of Western Australia, 2022), is a Specialist Endodontist and Senior Honorary Research Fellow in the Oral Restorative and Rehabilitative Sciences at the University of Western Australia Dental School. Following his specialist training, he practiced for 17 years in private specialist endodontic practice in Perth and Melbourne, concurrently holding part-time academic positions at UWA and the University of Melbourne. In 2002, he joined UWA full-time as Winthrop Professor of Clinical Dentistry. Between 2003 and 2009, he was Dean and Head of the School of Dentistry and Director of the Oral Health Centre of Western Australia. He also served as Deputy Executive Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences and Director of Postgraduate Studies and Research in the School of Dentistry.
Professor Abbott's research focuses on endodontics and dental traumatology, areas in which he has authored over 433 publications, including 272 refereed journal articles, 25 textbook chapters, and contributions to newsletters. Notable works include "Pulp, Root Canal and Peri-radicular Conditions: The Need for Re-classification" (2024, Iranian Endodontic Journal), "Tooth resorption—Part 2: A clinical classification" (2022, Dental Traumatology), "Managing endodontic emergencies" (2022, International Endodontic Journal), and "Diagnosis and management of transverse root fractures" (2019, Dental Traumatology). He has delivered more than 1,800 lectures and hands-on courses across 55 countries. As Editor-in-Chief of Dental Traumatology from 2015 to 2022, he served on editorial boards and review panels for 17 international journals. His leadership includes presidencies of the International Federation of Endodontic Associations, Asian-Pacific Endodontic Confederation, and Australian Society of Endodontology. Awards encompass the Officer of the Order of Australia (2015), Jens O. Andreasen Award for Lifetime Achievement in Dental Traumatology (2024), Louis I. Grossman Award (2025), multiple UWA Excellence in Teaching Awards, and numerous honorary memberships and distinguished service awards from dental associations.
