About Paul

Professor Paul Haber AM is a Professor of Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Health at the University of Sydney, where he has been Head of the Discipline of Addiction Medicine since 2009. Holding qualifications of MBBS, MD, PhD, FRACP, and FAChAM, he is a consultant gastroenterologist and addiction medicine specialist at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital. He serves as Clinical Director of Drug Health Services and Executive Director of Research for the Sydney Local Health District. Professor Haber has held key leadership roles, including President of the Chapter of Addiction Medicine of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians from 2013 to 2014, chair of the RACP Alcohol Working Group from 2014 to 2016, and chair of the Agency for Clinical Innovation Drug and Alcohol Treatment Network since 2017. He currently chairs the Drug and Alcohol Clinical Research and Improvement Network in New South Wales.

His research interests center on addiction medicine, encompassing alcohol use disorders, opioid dependence treatment, cannabis withdrawal, comorbid substance use and mental health conditions, and innovative therapies including psychedelics and cannabidiol. Professor Haber has produced over 350 peer-reviewed publications, cited more than 11,700 times according to ResearchGate. Notable contributions include chairing the steering committee for the 'Guidelines for the treatment of alcohol problems' (2016), co-authoring 'Addiction Medicine: Principles and Practice', and co-authoring 'Identification and Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorder' in the New England Journal of Medicine (2025). He has secured substantial research funding, such as the NHMRC Synergy Grant awarded in 2021 to his team for developing new treatments for alcohol use disorder, and the Faculty of Medicine and Health Rewarding Research Grant in 2024. In education, he established an addiction medicine course for psychiatrists, the Sydney Medical School program in Addiction Medicine, and a shared addiction medicine curriculum across Australian medical schools. In recognition of his service to medical education and research in addiction medicine, he was appointed Member of the Order of Australia in the 2019 Australia Day Honours.
