Joskow's academic interests encompass industrial organization, energy and environmental economics, competition policy, and government regulation of industry, with particular emphasis on electric power sector regulation, market design, and decarbonization. His influential publications include "Markets for Power: An Analysis of Electric Utility Deregulation" (1982), "Vertical Integration and Long-term Contracts: The Case of Coal-burning Electric Generating Plants" (1985), "Contract Duration and Relationship-Specific Investments: Empirical Evidence from Coal Markets" (1987), "Markets for Clean Air: The US Acid Rain Program" (2000), and "Lessons Learned from Electricity Market Liberalization" (2008).
