About Paul

Paul L. Joskow is the Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics and the Sloan School of Management at MIT, contributing prominently to Business & Economics. He received his B.A. in Economics with distinction in all subjects from Cornell University in 1968, M.Phil. in Economics from Yale University in 1970, and Ph.D. in Economics from Yale University in 1972. Joining the MIT faculty in 1972 as Assistant Professor of Economics, he progressed to Associate Professor (1975-1978), Professor (1978-1989), Mitsui Professor of Economics (1989-1996), and Professor of Economics and Management at the Sloan School (1989-2010). Notable administrative roles include Associate Head of the Department of Economics (1982-1985, 1993-1994), Head (1994-1998), and Director of the Center for Energy and Environmental Policy Research (1999-2007). From 2008 to 2017, Joskow served as President and Chief Executive Officer of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, after which he returned to MIT as Elizabeth and James Killian Professor of Economics, Emeritus (2018-2023), and resumed the Killian professorship in 2023. He is also an NBER Research Associate.

Joskow's academic interests encompass industrial organization, energy and environmental economics, competition policy, and government regulation of industry, with particular emphasis on electric power sector regulation, market design, and decarbonization. His influential publications include "Markets for Power: An Analysis of Electric Utility Deregulation" (1982), "Vertical Integration and Long-term Contracts: The Case of Coal-burning Electric Generating Plants" (1985), "Contract Duration and Relationship-Specific Investments: Empirical Evidence from Coal Markets" (1987), "Markets for Clean Air: The US Acid Rain Program" (2000), and "Lessons Learned from Electricity Market Liberalization" (2008). Among his honors are the Distinguished Fellow Award from the American Economic Association (2013) and Industrial Organization Society (2007), Fellow of the Econometric Society (1988), Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1991), Outstanding Contributions to the Profession Award from the International Association for Energy Economics (2004), and Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Paris-Dauphine (2007). Joskow has held editorial positions, including Co-Editor of the Journal of Law, Economics, and Organization (1992-1995) and the Economics of Energy and Environmental Policy (2011-2016), and served on boards of directors for companies like National Grid PLC, Exelon Corporation, and the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research, as well as various advisory boards and committees, including the Council on Foreign Relations and the Secretary of Energy Advisory Board (2013-2015).
