Professor Paul Mapfumo serves as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Zimbabwe since 2018, where he has led the institution's transformation into a comprehensive research and innovation hub aligned with Zimbabwe's Heritage-based Education 5.0 philosophy. A distinguished scientist and Full Professor in the Department of Soil Science and Environment at the Faculty of Agriculture, Environment and Food Systems, he earned his BSc Honours in Agriculture, MPhil, and PhD in Soil Science from the University of Zimbabwe. His research specializations encompass carbon and nitrogen dynamics in tropical agro-ecosystems, soil fertility management in smallholder farming systems, legume biological nitrogen fixation, farming systems ecology, agro-ecosystems analysis, participatory research methods, integrated soil fertility management, and climate change impacts on agriculture. Mapfumo has authored over 200 refereed scientific articles, supervised numerous PhD students and postdoctoral fellows, and contributed key publications such as co-editor of Innovations as Key to the Green Revolution in Africa (2007), author of Soil Fertility Management Strategies and Practices by Smallholder Farmers in Semi-Arid Areas of Zimbabwe (2001), and highly cited works including "Communicating complexity: integrated assessment of trade-offs concerning soil fertility management within African farming systems to support innovation and development" (2011, Agricultural Systems) and "Long-term impact of reduced tillage and residue management on soil carbon stabilization: Implications for conservation agriculture on contrasting soils" (2007, Soil and Tillage Research).
In addition to his academic leadership, Professor Mapfumo holds key national roles as Chairman of the National Manpower Advisory Council and Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council, and Vice Chairman of the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education. He previously served on the UN High-Level Panel of Experts of the Committee on World Food Security, convened the UN international report on agroecology, and chaired the African Centre for Fertilizer Development. His influence extends to providing evidence-based policy advice on agriculture, food systems, environment, and climate change across Africa. Mapfumo has received prestigious awards including the Presidential Award for the Best Performing Vice Chancellor in Zimbabwe (2024), African Educational Leadership Award (2024), Outstanding Leadership Award in Education from the Global Skills Hub, Tertiary Institution of the Year (2025) from the Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce, Quality Choice Award (2025) from the European Society for Quality Research, and ALM Persons of the Year Award.
