Rate My Professor Paul Rutter

Paul Rutter is Professor of Pharmacy Practice in Health Science at the University of Portsmouth. He qualified as a pharmacist in 1992 and initially worked as a community pharmacist before taking up teacher practitioner roles with Boots the Chemist at Bradford and Portsmouth Universities. He completed his PhD at the University of Portsmouth in 2000, focusing on skill mix in community pharmacy. His full-time academic career began at the University of Portsmouth from 2000 to 2005. He then joined the University of Wolverhampton from 2006 to 2015, where he contributed to establishing a new School of Pharmacy and was promoted to Professor in Pharmacy Practice in 2012. From 2015 to 2018 he held a professorial position at the University of Central Lancashire before returning to the University of Portsmouth in 2018.

His research centres on clinical reasoning and diagnostic performance in community pharmacy practice, the facilitation of self-care through community pharmacy, and the development of new services to improve patient care pathways including public health initiatives such as healthy living pharmacies. Paul Rutter is the sole author of the leading textbook Community Pharmacy: Symptoms, Diagnosis and Treatment, now in its fourth UK edition with adaptations for the Australian and New Zealand markets and translations into foreign languages. He delivers teaching on clinical reasoning and differential diagnosis using research-led methods including flipped classroom, team-based learning and gaming approaches. His work has influenced pharmacy education and practice through educational innovation and professional development initiatives.
