Paula Duarte-Guterman completed her PhD at the University of Ottawa, where her research investigated the interactions of thyroid and sex steroid hormones during frog development. She then undertook postdoctoral training at the University of British Columbia in the laboratory of Dr. Liisa Galea within the Behavioural Neuroendocrinology Lab at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health in the Department of Psychology. During her time at UBC, her work focused on how sex and major life history events such as parenthood influence behaviour and brain plasticity across the lifespan, employing rodent laboratory models.
Her research specializations include behavioural neuroscience in rodents, the effects of hormones on adult neurogenesis and plasticity, metabolism, parental experience, environment, aging, and learning and memory. She has also conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Ulm in Germany examining neuroendocrine mechanisms of paternal care in mice and has contributed to analyses of human databases. Dr. Duarte-Guterman is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at Brock University and holds the Canada Research Chair in Behavioural Neuroscience.
