Pauline Xu is a Senior Lecturer and clinical supervisor in the Doctor of Optometry program at the University of Western Australia (UWA), within the School of Health and Clinical Sciences, Optometry and Vision Science. She holds a Bachelor of Optometry with Class I Honours from the University of New South Wales (UNSW) in 2007, a Master of Optometry from UNSW in 2015, a Graduate Certificate in Ocular Therapeutics, and a Graduate Certificate in Tertiary Teaching from UWA. An accomplished optometrist, Pauline has practiced full-scope optometry in both rural and urban settings. She spent five years at the Brien Holden Vision Institute as a research optometrist and research manager, where she managed several international myopia control clinical trials. Subsequently, she served as Lead Clinician at the Centre for Eye Health (CFEH) in Sydney. In 2022, Pauline was appointed Clinic Director of the Eye Health Centre of Western Australia (EHCWA), leading the establishment of the first optometry teaching clinic in Western Australia. In 2024, she returned to Sydney as Principal Optometrist and Clinic Operations Manager at CFEH, while concurrently holding her Senior Lecturer role at UWA, Clinical Governance Officer at EHCWA, and lecturing positions in undergraduate and postgraduate optometry courses at UNSW School of Optometry and Vision Science.
Pauline Xu's research specializations include ocular imaging, retinal diseases, collaborative eye care, and clinical optometry. She regularly contributes to continuing professional development (CPD) for optometrists through presentations at national conferences and webcasts, as well as publications of articles and case reports. She has co-authored an imaging atlas and engages in peer review for academic journals. A key publication is 'Managing corneal foreign body injuries in a primary eye care setting,' co-authored with Jeremiah Kh Lim and published in Clinical and Experimental Optometry in 2026. Pauline received the 2025 LOOK travel scholarship from Optometry Australia and recognition for excellence in optometry teaching at UWA. Fluent in English and Chinese, she advocates for learner-centred, evidence-based education and practice in optometry.
