About Pedro

Pedro Ornelas is a PhD candidate in the School of Physics at the University of the Witwatersrand, where he conducts research in the Structured Light Laboratory. He holds a BSc degree awarded in 2021 and a BSc Honours degree awarded in 2022 from the same institution. His work focuses on quantum structured light, including the study of topological features embedded within entangled states of light and non-local skyrmions as topologically resilient quantum entangled states.

Ornelas has co-authored multiple peer-reviewed publications, including the 2024 paper Non-local skyrmions as topologically resilient quantum entangled states of light in Nature Photonics. In 2024 he received the John Kiel Scholarship from the International Society for Optics and Photonics (SPIE) in recognition of his contributions to the fields of optics and optical engineering. His research is supervised by Professor Andrew Forbes and explores applications in quantum communication and computing.
