Pedro Mario Pan Neto is a psychiatrist and researcher affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry at the Escola Paulista de Medicina of Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP). He earned his medical degree from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Paraná in 2007, followed by a master's degree in Psychiatry and Medical Psychology from UNIFESP in 2013. In 2018, he became the first graduate of the Tripartite Program in Developmental Psychiatry offered jointly by UNIFESP, USP, and UFRGS, completing his PhD with a thesis on the longitudinal assessment of mood disorders during the transition from childhood to adolescence, incorporating psychopathological, genetic, and neuroimaging markers. During his doctoral studies, he served as a researcher at the National Institute of Mental Health in the United States.
He held the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at UNIFESP from 2021 to 2023 and currently serves as an advisor in the Postgraduate Program in Psychiatry and Medical Psychology. As co-principal investigator of the Brazilian High Risk Cohort Study, a 15-year longitudinal project, his work has contributed to publications in journals including the American Journal of Psychiatry, JAMA Psychiatry, The Lancet Psychiatry, Cell, Nature, and Nature Neuroscience. His research integrates psychiatry, epidemiology, and neuroscience to examine youth mental health, social determinants, and problematic screen use, employing approaches such as transdiagnostic psychiatric staging and digital tools including wearables and ecological momentary assessment. He leads a 2024 PIPE FAPESP project and co-founded MindCheck, a digital mental health check-up initiative for young people. He also serves on the advisory board of the Instituto Ame Sua Mente.
