Dr. Peter Counsel serves as Adjunct Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Curtin Medical School within the Faculty of Health Sciences at Curtin University. He earned his MBBS with honours from the University of Western Australia in 2002, followed by a Diploma of Child Health from Princess Margaret Hospital in 2005, and qualified as a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Radiologists (FRANZCR) upon completing radiology training in 2011. His specialized training included a musculoskeletal radiology fellowship at Fremantle Hospital in 2011, a paediatric radiology fellowship at Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin, Dublin, Ireland in 2012, and an elite sports imaging and intervention fellowship at Imaging @ Olympic Park, Melbourne, Victoria in 2013 under the Philips Fellowship. Since 2014, he has held consultant radiologist positions at Perth Children’s Hospital and Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. That same year, he joined Perth Radiological Clinic, advancing to Partner in 2018, where he heads the Musculoskeletal (MSK) Fellowship Program and sits on the Research Committee.
Dr. Counsel's research and clinical expertise encompasses all aspects of musculoskeletal and paediatric imaging, including MRI, sports imaging, and ultrasound-guided procedures. He has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications, such as 'Muscle shear wave elastography, conventional B mode and power doppler ultrasonography in healthy adults and patients with autoimmune inflammatory myopathies: a pilot cross-sectional study' (BMC Musculoskelet Disord, 2021), 'Imaging in the diagnosis of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies; indications and utility' (Expert Rev Neurother, 2019), 'Plexiform neurofibroma causing an ossifying subperiosteal haematoma: a rare case in the tibia of an 11-year-old girl' (Skeletal Radiol, 2017), 'Normative MRI, ultrasound and muscle functional MRI findings in the forearms of asymptomatic elite rowers' (J Sci Med Sport, 2016), 'Ultrasound-Guided Radiofrequency Denervation of the Medial Calcaneal Nerve' (Clin J Sport Med, 2016), 'Pattern of Fascicular Involvement in Midportion Achilles Tendinopathy at Ultrasound' (Sports Health, 2015), 'Muscle injuries of the lower leg' (Semin Musculoskelet Radiol, 2010), and 'Myelopathy due to intrathecal chemotherapy: magnetic resonance imaging findings' (Clin Radiol, 2007). Additionally, he has served as Convenor for the RANZCR WA Branch Annual Scientific Meeting in 2021 and the AMSIG Meeting 2023 in Perth, and as a member of the AMSIG Education Committee since 2021.
