Dr. Peter Devereux serves as Senior Lecturer in Sustainability at Murdoch University, affiliated with the School of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences. He coordinates sustainability-focused courses such as Sustainability, Ecology and Communities, and Resilient Regions, while providing supervisory advice and support to PhD and Masters students. Devereux completed his PhD in International Development and Sustainability at Murdoch University from 2004 to 2010, with his doctoral thesis titled 'International Volunteers: Cheap Help or Transformational Solidarity Toward Sustainable Development.' His academic career builds on extensive practical experience in international development, including work as an international volunteer university teacher and with an NGO on environmental projects in Nicaragua.
Devereux's research specializations center on international volunteering for development, sustainable development, and the intersections between volunteering and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Key publications include 'International Volunteering for Development and Sustainability: Outdated Paternalism or a Radical Response to Globalisation?' published in 2008 in Development in Practice; 'Measuring the Contribution of Volunteering to the Sustainable Development Goals: Challenges and Opportunities' in 2016; 'Volunteering and the UN Sustainable Development Goals: Finding Common Ground Between National and International Volunteering Agendas?' in 2017; 'Voluntourism and the Sustainable Development Goals' as a book chapter in 2018; and 'Integrating International Development Volunteering With a University Degree: Learnings From the Australian Case' in 2025. Previously, he held the position of Policy Specialist for Volunteerism and Civil Society at United Nations Volunteers from December 2012 to November 2014, and served as a Research Fellow at Curtin University's Sustainability Policy Institute. Beyond academia, Devereux is an Elected Member of the Town of Victoria Park for the term 2021-2025.
